How to Convert a Video to GIF on iPhone
An iPhone video clip doesn’t play everywhere. Drop a .MOV into an iMessage sticker, a Discord emoji slot, a WhatsApp status, or a Reddit comment, and it either gets rejected or plays back oddly. Grabio’s “Video → GIF” option converts any video from your Photos app into a GIF in a couple of taps from the share sheet: on-device, free, and with no App Store app to download.
Why videos don’t work where GIFs do
iMessage stickers, Discord custom emojis, WhatsApp status clips, and Reddit/Slack comment embeds are all built around the GIF format, not .MOV or .MP4. A video you shot on your iPhone plays fine in Photos, but paste it into one of these spots and it either won’t upload, gets auto-converted into something lower quality, or just sits there as a broken attachment. The fix is converting the clip to a GIF before you share it, not after.
How to convert a video to GIF on iPhone with Grabio
- Add Grabio to your iPhone once — it’s a free Apple Shortcut. Get the free Shortcut here and it’s ready in a few seconds.
- Open the video in your Photos app and tap the Share button.
- Scroll down the share sheet and tap Grabio.
- Tap Video → GIF from the Grabio menu.
- Grabio runs Apple’s native GIF conversion right on your phone and saves the result to Photos. You’ll see “✓ Done — saved to your Photos.” when it’s finished.
Is it private and free on iPhone?
The conversion runs entirely on your iPhone using Apple’s own makeGIF action — nothing is uploaded anywhere, so it works even in airplane mode. Grabio is 100% free forever: no account, no login, no subscription, no App Store app, and no daily limit on how many videos you convert.
Video to GIF on iPhone: FAQ
Does the GIF keep the video’s sound?
No. GIF is an image format and has no audio track, so any sound in the original video is dropped — this is true for GIFs made any way, not just with Grabio.
Can I convert a Live Photo to a GIF this way?
Video → GIF is built for regular video clips. A Live Photo is a different file type in Photos, so convert it to a still or a full video first, then run it through Video → GIF if you want an animated version.
Is there a size or length limit for messaging apps?
Grabio itself doesn’t cap the length or size of the GIF it makes, but iMessage, Discord, WhatsApp, and Reddit each enforce their own upload limits and will compress or reject a GIF that’s too large — keep the source clip short (a few seconds) for the cleanest result in chat apps.
