Delete Duplicate Photos on iPhone in Under a Minute

You AirDropped the same photo twice, or Live Photos saved a burst as three near-identical shots, or a WhatsApp save landed next to the original you’d already imported.

Your camera roll is quietly full of copies of the same picture, and scrolling through thousands of photos to find and delete them one by one isn’t a real plan. You don’t have to — Photos already did the finding for you.

Where the duplicate finder actually is

Open Photos, tap the Albums tab at the bottom, then scroll down past My Albums to a section called Utilities. If Photos has found any duplicates on your device, you’ll see an album literally called Duplicates with a number badge showing how many sets it found.

If you don’t see it at all, that’s not a bug — the album only appears once the system has actually detected a duplicate pair, so no entry means it hasn’t found any.

Merging instead of just deleting

Tap into Duplicates and you’ll see pairs (or small groups) of near-identical photos side by side, sometimes with a size difference noted underneath — one might be a lower-resolution copy saved from a message, the other your original.

Tap Merge under a pair to combine them, or tap Select at the top, choose Select All, and merge everything in one pass. Merging isn’t a blind delete: iOS keeps the highest-quality version, combines the metadata (edits, favorites, keywords) from both copies into that one, and removes the redundant file.

Why your storage number doesn’t move immediately

After merging, the freed-up photos don’t vanish from your device instantly — they move to the Recently Deleted album, same as anything else you delete from Photos, and sit there for 30 days before iOS clears them automatically.

If you want the storage back today rather than next month, open Albums → Recently Deleted, tap Select, then Delete All, and confirm. That step is easy to miss, and it’s the reason people merge duplicates and then wonder why they didn’t actually reclaim any space.

What it won’t catch

The Duplicates album is built for genuinely identical or near-identical files — the same shot saved twice, a photo and its exact re-import.

It won’t group together five similar-but-different shots from the same burst where you moved slightly between frames, and it won’t flag a screenshot as a duplicate of the photo it’s a screenshot of. For that kind of clutter, you’re still looking at a manual scroll, though the Duplicates pass is worth doing first since it’s zero-effort.

If storage is the real problem

Clearing duplicates helps, but it’s rarely the whole fix if your phone says storage is full. Videos and unedited originals from Live Photos tend to take up far more space than a handful of duplicate stills.
