You found a Reel worth keeping, a recipe, a workout, something genuinely useful, and tapped Save. It’s in your Saved items now, inside Facebook, on Facebook’s servers. That’s not the same as having the file on your phone, and if the video ever gets taken down, your saved copy disappears with it. Here’s how to get an actual file into your camera roll instead.

Why Facebook’s Save button isn’t a download

Facebook’s Save is a bookmark, a pointer back to the original post, the same idea as a Pinterest board or a browser bookmark. Nothing is copied to your device.

Save a Facebook Reel to Your iPhone Camera Roll

It’s genuinely useful for finding something again later inside the app, but it depends entirely on the original post staying up. If the person who posted it deletes it or their account goes away, your saved Reel turns into a broken link.

  1. Open the Reel in the Facebook app.
  2. Tap the share icon (the arrow) below the video.
  3. Tap Copy Link.

That gives you a facebook.com/reel/ address. If the Reel is set to a restricted audience (friends-only, or a private group), the same visibility rule applies as anywhere else: if you can’t view it without being logged in as someone with access, a downloader won’t be able to either.

Grabio doesn’t fetch Facebook video itself, it hands the link you copied to a dedicated third-party site that does the actual fetching, then opens it for you:

  1. Copy the Reel link as above.
  2. Run Grabio from the Shortcuts app or the share sheet.
  3. Pick the video handoff option, it opens the site with your link already filled in.
  4. Choose MP4 and download.
  5. Safari’s download arrow shows it landing in your Downloads folder.

These third-party sites carry ads, and some are styled to look exactly like the download button. If a page asks for a configuration profile, notification permission, or anything beyond picking a format and downloading, close the tab.

The step everybody forgets

The video lands in Files, not Photos, and it stays there until you move it:

  1. Open Files, Browse, Downloads.
  2. Tap the file to confirm it plays.
  3. Tap Share, then Save Video.

It now shows up in Recents in Photos. Files and the photo library are two separate systems on iOS, and this manual step is the only thing that connects them.

When it doesn’t work

  • Reel is friends-only or in a closed group. A downloader can’t see what you can’t see logged out. Check the post’s audience setting first.
  • File comes down as WEBM. Photos won’t import it, go back and choose MP4 explicitly.
  • Download is a few KB. That’s a failed download, not a small video. Try again.
  • Shortcuts lacks Photos permission. Settings, Apps, Shortcuts, Photos, allow access.

What’s fair to save

Keeping a copy for your own personal reference, a recipe, a tutorial, something you’ll want when you’re offline, is the ordinary case and unremarkable. Reposting someone else’s Reel as your own or using it commercially without permission is a different matter entirely and can run into both Facebook’s terms and copyright law regardless of how the file got onto your phone.

What to do with it after

Reels are short and already fairly compressed, so there’s usually not much to do beyond trimming if you only want part of it. If you’re planning to forward the video somewhere with a size limit, running it through Grabio’s compress option first keeps quality reasonable while cutting the file down.

If you only care about the audio, say a song or sound clip from the Reel, extracting just the audio track is covered in how to convert a video to audio on iPhone.

Grabio’s own on-device tools cover convert to JPG/PNG, compress, resize, crop, remove backgrounds, strip metadata, make PDFs and GIFs, and extract audio, all without uploading anything. For pulling video off a platform, the menu hands that specific step to a dedicated site. If that’s useful, get the shortcut, free, no account, installs from a link in under a minute.

Frequently asked questions

Does Facebook’s Save button download the video to my phone?

No, it bookmarks the post inside Facebook’s Saved items. Nothing is copied to your device, and the saved item breaks if the original post is removed.

Why can’t I download a Reel from a private Facebook group?

Content visibility follows the same rules for a downloader as it does for you in a browser. If you’d need to log in and be a member to view the post, a tool that isn’t logged in as a member can’t fetch it either.

Is it legal to save Facebook Reels?

Saving for personal, offline viewing is the ordinary case. Reposting the video as your own content or using it commercially without the creator’s permission can violate both Facebook’s terms and copyright law.

Why isn’t the Reel showing up in my Photos app after downloading?

Downloaded files go to the Files app’s Downloads folder, not Photos automatically. Open the file, tap Share, then Save Video, and it appears in Recents.

Does Grabio fetch the Facebook video itself?

No, it hands your copied link to a dedicated third-party site that does the fetching, then opens it for you. Grabio’s own tools take over afterward for converting, compressing, and trimming.
