How to Delete Shortcuts on iPhone

Deleting a shortcut takes about two seconds once you know where the delete option lives. The reason people search for this is rarely the deletion itself. It is one of the four situations where deleting appears to do nothing, and iOS gives you no explanation for any of them.

I build and ship a Shortcut, so I get these questions regularly. Someone deletes a shortcut and it reappears the next morning. Someone deletes one and it is still cluttering the share sheet a week later.

Someone cannot find the shortcut anywhere in the app but their phone keeps running it at 7am. All four have a cause and a fix, and I will get to them after the basic method.

The basic delete, three ways

All three of these work. Use whichever suits your hands.

Long press. Open the Shortcuts app, stay on the Shortcuts tab at the bottom, and press and hold the tile you want gone. A context menu appears with Delete at the bottom in red. Tap it, then confirm.

Swipe, if you use list view. If you have switched the tab to a list layout, swipe left across the row and the red Delete button appears directly.

Select several at once. This is the one worth learning if you have accumulated a pile. Tap Select in the top right, tap every shortcut you want gone so each gets a tick, then tap Delete in the bottom corner. Far quicker than doing them individually.

There is no confirmation dialogue beyond the first tap on some iOS versions, and there is no undo. Which brings me to the first thing that trips people up.

There is no Recently Deleted for shortcuts

Photos has a Recently Deleted album. Notes has one. Files has one. Shortcuts does not. When a shortcut is gone, it is gone, and the only way back is to reinstall it from wherever you originally got it.

If the shortcut is one you built yourself and it took real effort, export a copy before you delete. Long press it, choose Share, and pick Save to Files. That writes a .shortcut file you can double tap later to reinstall the whole thing exactly as it was. Thirty seconds of insurance against losing an hour of work.

Why a deleted shortcut comes back

This is the number one complaint and the cause is almost always iCloud sync. Shortcuts sync across every device signed into the same Apple Account. If you delete a shortcut on your iPhone while your iPad has a stale copy and no connection, the iPad can push its version back when it next comes online.

The fix is to make sure the deletion actually propagates. Delete it on the iPhone, then open the Shortcuts app on every other device signed into the same account and confirm it is gone there too. Give iCloud a minute with the app open, since sync often waits for the app to be in the foreground.

You can check whether syncing is on at all under Settings, then your name at the top, then iCloud, then See All and look for Shortcuts. Leaving it on is usually right. Turning it off stops the reappearing behaviour permanently, at the cost of your shortcuts no longer following you between devices.

Removing a shortcut from the share sheet

A shortcut can appear in the iOS share sheet without you doing anything special, and deleting the shortcut removes it from there too. What confuses people is a stale share sheet that keeps showing an entry after the shortcut is gone, or an entry that was never wanted in the first place.

To control what appears there, open the shortcut, tap the info button, which looks like an (i), and find Show in Share Sheet. Switch it off and the shortcut stays in your library while disappearing from every share menu. This is the setting you want when a shortcut is useful occasionally but is cluttering the sheet daily.

To reorder or hide entries in the share sheet itself, open any share sheet, scroll to the very bottom of the action list, and tap Edit Actions. You can toggle entries off and drag them into a different order from there. It is a genuinely useful screen that Apple has hidden about as thoroughly as possible.

If the sheet still shows something that should be gone, restart the phone. The share sheet caches its extension list and a restart is the reliable way to clear it.

Automations are separate, and this catches everyone

Here is the one that produces the strangest bug reports. Your shortcuts and your automations live in two different tabs, and deleting from one does not touch the other.

If your phone is still doing something on a schedule, at a location, or when you connect to a charger, the culprit is on the Automation tab at the bottom of the Shortcuts app. Open it, swipe left on the automation row, and tap Delete. Or tap the automation and switch Enable This Automation off if you want to keep it around for later.

An automation can also reference a shortcut you deleted, in which case it fails silently or throws an error notification with no useful detail. If you are seeing a mystery error every morning, that is where to look first.

Home Screen icons and widgets

If you added a shortcut to your Home Screen, that icon is a separate object from the shortcut. Deleting the shortcut leaves a dead icon behind that does nothing when tapped, which is exactly as annoying as it sounds.

Remove it the way you remove any app icon. Long press the icon, choose Remove Bookmark or Delete Bookmark depending on your iOS version, and confirm. The wording differs from app removal because a Home Screen shortcut is technically a web clip rather than an app.

Same principle for widgets. Long press the widget, choose Remove Widget, and it is gone.

Removing Grabio, since people ask

Grabio is an ordinary Shortcut, so everything above applies to it with no special steps. Long press it in the Shortcuts app, tap Delete, and it is off your phone. There is no account to close, no subscription to cancel and nothing left behind, because there was never an App Store install in the first place.

A quick tidy-up worth doing

If your Shortcuts library has become a graveyard, spend five minutes on this. Use Select to bin anything you have not run in six months.

For the ones you keep, switch Show in Share Sheet off for everything except the three or four you genuinely use from the share menu. Then open Edit Actions at the bottom of a share sheet and drag those few to the top.

Can I recover a shortcut I deleted by accident?

No. Shortcuts has no Recently Deleted area, so the only recovery is reinstalling from the original source or from a.shortcut file you exported earlier. If a shortcut took real work to build, export a copy through Share and Save to Files before deleting anything.
