How Grabio Works: No App, No Account, No File Ever Touches Our Server

I get some version of this question a lot: “wait, where does my file actually go?” It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is worth spelling out plainly instead of hiding behind a generic privacy policy page. Here’s exactly what happens when you use Grabio, no marketing spin.

Grabio Is Not an App

There’s no App Store listing, nothing to download and install. Grabio is an Apple Shortcut, a small automation file that lives inside iOS’s own Shortcuts app. You add it once from a link, and after that it shows up in your share sheet next to Mail and Messages, like any other share destination. That’s the entire “install.”

Most Tools Run Entirely On Your Phone

When you compress a photo, convert HEIC to JPG, shrink a PDF, trim a video, or extract audio from a clip, Grabio uses Apple’s own built-in Shortcuts actions to do the work. Those actions run locally, on your iPhone’s own processor, using your iPhone’s own storage. Nothing gets uploaded to a server to make any of that happen, which is also why these tools work with no signal or in airplane mode. If you want to see this in practice, reducing a photo’s file size or compressing a PDF are both fully on-device.

Where a Website Has to Be Involved, the File Goes There Directly

A handful of jobs genuinely can’t happen on an iPhone with Apple’s own tools: merging PDFs, decoding a QR code from an image, or downloading a video from YouTube or another platform. For those, Grabio opens a specific, vetted third-party site (like cobalt.tools for supported platforms, noadsdl.com for YouTube and others, PDF24 for merging PDFs) with your link or file passed straight to that site. What Grabio’s Own Server Actually Does

Two things, and that’s it. First, it hosts and distributes the Shortcut file itself, so when you tap the install link, you’re downloading the automation from us. Second, it counts anonymous redirect hits when you use a download tool, purely a number going up, no file, no filename, no link content attached to it. The link you’re downloading travels in a part of the URL that browsers never send to a server, so even that counting step can’t see what you’re downloading. No user file and no user data passes through our server at any point.

How Grabio Works: FAQ

If Grabio isn’t an app, how do updates work?

When I ship a new version, I update the Shortcut and change what the install link points to. Anyone who installed Grabio from a link that stays the same (like our main install page) automatically gets pointed at the latest version the next time they reinstall or reference it, no App Store review wait involved.

Does Grabio see what I download or convert?

No. On-device tools never leave your phone, so there’s nothing to see. For the handoff tools, the file or link goes straight to the third-party site, and the anonymous hit counter on our end has no visibility into the link or file content itself.

Why trust a Shortcut instead of a normal app?

You don’t have to take it on faith, Shortcuts are inspectable, you can open any Shortcut and see every action it runs before you use it. That transparency is part of why I built Grabio this way instead of as a closed-source app.
