iOS 27 Release Date and What It Changes for Shortcuts

Every year around this time I get the same message from Grabio users: “is the update going to break my Shortcut?” It is a fair worry, and the honest answer starts with getting the facts about the release itself straight.

So here is what actually happened, and what it changes for Shortcuts.

What Apple confirmed, and what actually shipped

Apple unveiled iOS 27 at WWDC in June 2026. It ran as a developer and public beta over the summer, and at its 9 September 2026 iPhone event, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo, Apple confirmed the update would arrive on Monday 14 September.

It did: iOS 27 rolled out that day starting around 10am Pacific time, reaching different time zones over the following hours as Apple’s usual staggered rollout worked through the day.

iOS 26 was the version before it. If you had not opted into the beta programme, your iPhone stayed on iOS 26 until you tapped Update in Settings, and plenty of people still have not updated.

Which iPhones got it

iOS 27 supports every iPhone back to the iPhone 11 and the second generation iPhone SE. That is an unusually generous list, and it means most people reading this were offered the update.

Support and full functionality are two different things, though. The headline features lean heavily on Apple Intelligence, and those need newer hardware. The new Siri AI also has regional gaps: it did not launch on iPhone or iPad in the EU, and it remains unavailable in China while Apple works through regulatory issues there.

So an older iPhone 11 runs iOS 27 fine, and the parts Apple spent its keynote on simply do not appear on it.

What actually changed for Shortcuts

This is the part I care about, since Grabio is a Shortcut. The main Shortcuts change in iOS 27 is a feature Apple calls Describe a Shortcut.

You type a plain English description of what you want to happen, Apple Intelligence interprets it, and it assembles the actions for you across supported apps. Safari got a matching Describe an Extension feature, and Apple Intelligence now shows up inside Shortcuts as an action you can call.

For someone who has never built an automation, that lowers the barrier a lot. For anyone who already builds Shortcuts by hand, it is a starting point generator rather than a replacement for knowing which actions exist.

The underlying action library, the share sheet integration, the file handling, none of that was rebuilt. Which is the important bit: the machinery Grabio is built on was not replaced.

Did Grabio break?

Grabio is assembled from Apple’s own standard Shortcuts actions, the same encode, convert, resize and share actions Apple documents and uses in its own Gallery shortcuts. Apple does not tend to remove those between releases, because thousands of automations would break at once, and nothing in what shipped in iOS 27 touched them.

The pieces most likely to need attention after any OS update are the handoffs to outside websites, and those sit outside Apple’s control anyway rather than being an iOS compatibility question.

The advantage of shipping a Shortcut instead of an App Store app is repair speed. There is no review queue. If something ever needs a fix, I can change the Shortcut and change what the install link points at, and the fix is live the same day.

If you have not updated yet

1. Back up first. Settings, your name at the top, iCloud, iCloud Backup, then Back Up Now. It takes minutes and it is the only thing standing between you and a bad afternoon.
2. Check your storage. A major iOS update wants several gigabytes free. If you are hovering near full, this is a good time to clear out video files you already saved. Compressing the heavy ones is a two tap job, covered in the video compression guide.
3. There is no prize for rushing. iOS 27.0.1 and further point releases follow the same pattern every year, cleaning up whatever the first build missed. Waiting costs you nothing.

If you are still on an older iPhone

The iPhone 11 and iPhone SE second generation making the cut is good news, and it is worth remembering that most of the useful file work on an iPhone has nothing to do with the AI features.

Converting a photo, pulling audio out of a video, shrinking a PDF for an upload form, saving a clip you are entitled to keep, all of that runs on the same on-device Shortcuts actions it has for years, on iOS 26 or iOS 27 alike.

There is no urgency either way. Back up first, make sure you have storage free, and update whenever suits you. Waiting a week or two past release costs you nothing and lets any early point-release bugs get ironed out first.

Do I need to reinstall Grabio after updating iOS?

No. Shortcuts survive an iOS update the same way your other data does. If a specific tool inside Grabio ever needs a fix after an update, the Shortcut points you at the current version rather than leaving you on a broken one.
