MOV files from an iPhone are big. Genuinely, absurdly big compared to what most people expect. A minute of 4K at 60 frames per second lands somewhere around 400 MB.

Shoot a three-minute clip of your kid’s school play and you have well over a gigabyte sitting in your camera roll, which will not attach to an email, will not fit a form upload, and will make a WhatsApp send crawl.

So you go looking for a compress button. There isn’t one. That is the honest starting point for this whole article, and it is worth stating plainly before anything else.

iOS gives you exactly three levers on video size, and only one of them helps with a file you already have.

Recording resolution is set under Settings, then Camera, then Record Video. Dropping from 4K 60 to 1080p 30 makes future recordings dramatically smaller. Useless for existing footage.

Trimming works on existing footage and it works well. Open the clip in Photos, tap Edit, drag the yellow handles on the filmstrip, tap Done, and choose Save Video as New Clip.

Mail Drop and iCloud links sidestep the problem instead of solving it. Apple uploads the file and sends a link, so you never compress anything. Excellent when a link will do, useless when a form wants the file itself. Those routes are covered in how to send a large video file from an iPhone.

What iOS does not have is any way to re-encode an existing video at a lower quality. No option in Photos, nothing in Files, no Apple share sheet action. That gap is real and it is why this search exists.

Trim first, always

I put this before the compression step deliberately, because people skip it and then wonder why the result is still too big.

Almost every phone video has dead weight. Three seconds of you raising the phone. Four seconds at the end while you find the stop button. A stretch in the middle where nothing happens. Cutting those is free in every sense, since trimming removes frames rather than re-encoding them, so the remaining footage is bit for bit identical to the original.

Trim to what actually matters, then compress. Very often the trim alone gets you under the limit and you can stop.

Compressing the MOV

Open the video in Photos or Files, tap Share, scroll the sheet and tap Grabio. The video menu appears, and the top of it is the compression range:

  • Compress for sharing picks sensible settings for you. This is the one to use when you just want the file smaller and you have no specific target.
  • 1080p Full HD when the source was 4K. Going from 4K to 1080p removes roughly three quarters of the pixel data before any codec work happens, and on any screen smaller than a large television the difference is hard to see.
  • 720p HD is my default for anything that will be watched on a phone, sent in a chat, or attached to an email.
  • 480p mobile when a hard limit leaves no choice. It is visibly soft on a laptop and fine on a phone.

The result returns through the share sheet, so you pick the destination. Save to Files when it is going to an upload form or a computer. Save to Photos when you want it in your library. The original stays exactly as it was either way.

Where the size actually goes

Understanding the three factors makes the choice obvious rather than a guess.

Resolution is the pixel count per frame, and it scales as an area. Halving the width and height quarters the pixels. This is the biggest single lever and it is why the 4K to 1080p step is so effective.

Frame rate is frames per second. 60fps stores twice as much as 30fps. Unless you shot slow motion or fast action deliberately, 60fps is buying you very little on a clip destined for a chat window.

Motion is the one people never think about. Video codecs only store what changed between frames. A locked-off shot of a person talking compresses beautifully. A handheld pan across a busy street changes every pixel every frame and compresses badly. This is why two clips with identical settings and lengths can differ in size by several times.

Practical consequence: if your compressed file is still too big, brace the phone next time, and for the file in front of you, trim harder before dropping another resolution step.

Picking a target for the destination

The container question, which is separate

Worth separating these two, because people conflate them and then get confused about why compression did not fix an incompatibility.

MOV is the container, meaning the wrapper around the video data. Compression changes the data inside. If your problem is that the file is too large, compress. If your problem is that a Windows machine or an upload form refuses to open it, the container or the codec is at fault and compressing alone will not help.

Stop creating the problem

If this happens to you often, change the camera setting and the problem largely goes away.

Go to Settings, then Camera, then Record Video, and pick 1080p HD at 30 fps. That is more than enough for anything watched on a phone, a laptop or a normal television, and it produces files that are a small fraction of 4K 60. Switch up to 4K deliberately when you are filming something that deserves it.

While you are in there, Settings, then Camera, then Formats controls the codec. High Efficiency gives smaller files using HEVC. Most Compatible gives larger files using H.264 that older systems can actually play. Pick based on where your video usually ends up.
