How to Save Videos from TikTok to Gallery on iPhone

Gallery is the Android word. On an iPhone the equivalent is the Photos app, and specifically your camera roll, which is where a saved TikTok lands if everything goes right. The trouble is that everything frequently does not go right, and the reason is almost never your phone.

You tap Share, you look for Save video, and it is missing. Or it is there but greyed out. Or it saves something with a watermark bouncing around it. I have hit all three, and each one has a specific cause worth understanding, because the cause tells you which workaround is appropriate.

Try TikTok’s own save button first

This is the route the platform intends and the one that respects the creator’s choice, so it should always be your first attempt.

1. Open the video in the TikTok app.
2. Tap the share arrow on the right hand side of the screen.
3. In the row of options that slides up, look for Save video.
4. Tap it. A progress ring appears, then the video is in Photos.

The first time you do this, iOS asks whether TikTok may add to your photo library. Say yes, or the save silently fails and you spend ten minutes convinced the button is broken. If you already said no by accident, go to Settings, Apps, TikTok, Photos and change it.

Why the save button goes missing

Several separate things can remove it, and they look identical from your side.

• The creator turned downloads off. TikTok gives every account a setting for this, and it can also be set per video. A lot of creators disable it deliberately to stop their work being reposted without credit. This is the most common reason.
• The account is private. Private accounts do not offer downloads to anyone.
• Music licensing. Videos using certain licensed commercial tracks have downloads restricted, because the licence covers playback in the app and does not cover you keeping a copy.
• Region and app version differences. The available share options vary by market and change over time, so what a friend sees is not always what you see.

Only the first of these is something you could ask about. If it is a creator you know, messaging them is genuinely the fastest fix, and most people say yes.

The watermark, and why it exists

When TikTok’s own save works, the file you get has a watermark with the TikTok logo and the creator’s username, and it moves around the frame so it cannot be cropped out easily. That is deliberate. It is attribution and it is advertising at the same time.

If you are saving something to watch later or to send to one friend, the watermark is irrelevant. If you are saving it because you want to repost it as your own, the watermark is doing exactly what it was designed to do, and I would gently suggest that is the correct outcome.

The screen recording fallback

When the save option is unavailable and you have a legitimate reason to keep the video, iOS can record the screen. This is a system feature and it works on anything the screen can display.

1. Go to Settings, Control Centre and add Screen Recording to your included controls if it is not there already.
2. Swipe down from the top right corner to open Control Centre.
3. Tap the record button, wait for the three second countdown, and switch to TikTok.
4. Play the video. Let it run once through.
5. Open Control Centre again and tap the record button to stop, or tap the red indicator at the top of the screen.

The recording lands in Photos. It captures your status bar, any notification that arrives mid recording, and the TikTok interface on top of the video, so plan to trim it. This is a lower quality copy by definition, since you are re-recording a decoded video off the display.

Turn on Do Not Disturb first. A message preview sliding across the top of your saved video is the classic mistake, and it is worse when you have already sent the file to someone.

Cleaning up a screen recording

Two jobs, both quick. Trim the dead ends where you were tapping around, and crop the frame if you want the interface gone.

Trimming is native. Open the recording in Photos, tap Edit, drag the yellow handles at either end of the filmstrip, tap Done. It is non destructive, so you can revert later. I walked through the details in trimming a video on iPhone without an app.

After that, the file will probably be larger than you expect, because screen recordings are recorded at the display’s resolution and refresh rate. Useful things to do with a saved TikTok

Once it is in Photos it is a normal video file and everything in iOS applies.

• Compress it before sending, because chat apps will otherwise re-encode it badly on your behalf.

One thing worth saying about reposting

Saving a video for yourself and republishing it as your own are different acts. The second one is what the download toggle and the watermark are both there to prevent, and it is what gets accounts removed.

If you are collecting reference, inspiration or something you want to rewatch offline, none of that applies. If you are building a page out of other people’s clips, it does, and no tool changes that.
