How to Save Pinterest Videos to Camera Roll on iPhone

Pinterest has a save button and it saves nothing to your phone. It pins the item to one of your boards, on Pinterest’s servers, where it stays until the person who posted it deletes it or the account goes away. People discover this the hard way when a recipe video or a workout they saved two years ago turns into a grey box.

Getting a Pinterest video into your actual camera roll is a different job. It is doable on an iPhone with nothing from the App Store. Here is how it works, plus the bit most posts on this topic skip, which is what you are and are not entitled to do with somebody else’s video.

Why the Pinterest save button is not a download

Pinterest is a bookmarking service that looks like a gallery. A pin is a pointer: an image or video hosted somewhere, plus a link back to the source. When you save a pin you are copying that pointer into a board of your own.

Nothing is stored on your device. Pinterest’s offline behaviour is a small cache that it clears whenever it likes. So when the original disappears, your pin becomes a grey placeholder, and there is nothing you can do about it after the fact.

That is the argument for pulling a real file down for anything you genuinely rely on. A recipe you cook every month, a physio routine, a tutorial you go back to. Once it is in Photos, it is yours to keep and it works in airplane mode.

What you can fairly save

I would rather say this before the instructions than bury it at the end.

A Pinterest video was made by somebody. Saving it to your own camera roll for personal reference is the ordinary case and nobody is going to have a problem with it.

Reposting it as your own content, running it in an ad, or stripping the creator’s watermark is a different thing entirely, and it is the kind of thing that gets accounts removed and occasionally gets people sued.

The clear cases: your own pins, your own uploads, videos where the creator has explicitly said reuse is fine, and material you have licensed. Everything else, save it for yourself and leave it there.

Getting the link out of Pinterest

Everything starts with the link, and Pinterest gives you two different ones depending on where you tap.

1. Open the pin in the Pinterest app.
2. Tap the share icon, which is the arrow near the bottom of the pin.
3. Tap Copy link.

That gives you a pinterest.com or pin.it address pointing at the pin. Take that one.

What you do not want is the source link, the one that opens the original website. Some pins are hosted on Pinterest and some just point at a blog or a TikTok, and if you copy the source link you will end up somewhere completely different from where you thought you were going.

You can also do this in Safari. Open pinterest.com, find the pin, and copy the address from the address bar. Same result.

Turning that link into a file

Here is where I need to be precise about what my own tool does, because the answer changed this year.

Grabio is a free iOS Shortcut I built. As of version 3.1 it does not fetch social media itself. What it does is take your link and open a third party site with it, one of fastsaver.io, noadsdl.com, or cobalt.tools depending on the menu entry.

Those sites do the fetching. I would rather write that plainly than let anybody believe the Shortcut is doing something it is not.

So the flow is:

1. Copy the pin link as above.
2. Run Grabio, from the Shortcuts app or from the share sheet.
3. Pick the video handoff option. Grabio opens the site with your link already in place.
4. On that site, choose MP4 and tap download.
5. Safari’s blue download arrow appears in the address bar and the file lands in your Downloads folder.

A warning about those sites, since I am the one sending you there. They are not mine. They run ads, and some of the ads are designed to look like the download button.

If a page asks you to install a configuration profile, allow notifications, or grant a permission before it will work, close the tab. A video converter needs none of those things and the request tells you what the site is really up to.

The step everybody forgets

Your video is now in the Files app. It is not in your camera roll, and it never will be until you do this:

1. Open Files, tap Browse, go to Downloads.
2. Tap the video file to check it plays.
3. Tap Share, then Save Video.

It now appears in Recents in the Photos app. iOS keeps documents and the photo library in two separate places that never sync with each other, and this one manual step is the bridge between them. It is behind almost every message I get saying a download did not work.

When Save Video does not appear

Four causes, in order of how often I see them:

• The file is a WEBM. Photos will not import it. Go back to the download site and choose MP4 explicitly. Renaming the file does not help, because the container inside is genuinely different from what the extension claims.
• The download did not finish. Check the size in Files. A 30 KB video is a failed download.
• Shortcuts does not have photo access. Settings, then Apps, then Shortcuts, then Photos, and allow access. Without it a Shortcut can appear to succeed and save nothing.
• Storage is full. iOS reports this badly. Check Settings, General, iPhone Storage.

What to do with it once it is in Photos

Pinterest videos are usually short, vertical, and heavily compressed already, which shapes what is worth doing next.

Trim it. Most saved videos have twenty seconds of intro you never watch. Tap Edit in Photos and drag the filmstrip handles. Details in trimming a video on iPhone without an app.

Turn it into a GIF. For a short loop, a demonstration of a technique, or a step in a recipe, a GIF is easier to scrub through than a video and it plays inline in messages. Trim to a few seconds first, since a long GIF becomes enormous fast. The method is in converting a video to GIF on iPhone.

Compress it before sending. If you are forwarding it to somebody, run it through Grabio’s compress option first. Vertical video at full resolution is bigger than it looks, and the tradeoffs are laid out in shrinking videos for WhatsApp and other apps.

Keep the audio only. For a talking video where you only care about what was said, extracting the audio gives you something you can listen to with the screen off.

Organising what you save

If you start pulling videos down, they land in Recents next to your actual photos, and if iCloud Photos is on they sync and count against your plan.

Two habits that keep this sane. Make an album, call it Saved or Recipes or whatever fits, and drop each video into it as it arrives. And delete the copy in the Downloads folder once the video is safely in Photos, because otherwise every video is on your phone twice and the Downloads folder becomes a landfill.

Why the Shortcut is free
