Convert FLAC to MP3 on iPhone, Free, No App
To convert FLAC to MP3 on iPhone, open the FLAC file in Files, tap Share, choose Grabio, then pick Audio, then MP3. Grabio opens a free converter site, you select the file there and download the MP3 back to your phone. iPhone has no built-in FLAC-to-MP3 option, so one extra step is unavoidable.
At a glance
- Time: about a minute for one track.
- Cost: free. No account, nothing to upgrade to.
- Needs: the free Grabio Shortcut and the FLAC file saved in Files.
- Catch: MP3 is lossy, so keep your original FLAC.
FLAC files turn up on an iPhone in a few ways. You bought an album from a store that sells lossless downloads. A friend sent a track. You ripped a CD years ago and now want it in the car. In each case the file sits in Files and the thing you are feeding it to wants MP3.

- Add the free Shortcut once: get Grabio. No App Store download and no sign-up.

- Touch and hold the file, tap Share, then tap Grabio.
- Choose Audio, then MP3.
- Grabio opens the converter site VERT in Safari. Tap its upload area and pick your FLAC file. iOS does not let any Shortcut drop a file into a website for you, so this tap is yours to make.
- Set the output to MP3, convert, and download the MP3 back to your iPhone.
If something stops working at step 5, how Grabio works explains what the Shortcut does and what the site does.
Does iPhone play FLAC already?
Often you do not need MP3 at all. Apple lists FLAC among the audio formats iPhone can play, in its iPhone 16 tech specs. So if you only want to listen on your own phone, try tapping the file in Files first.
MP3 earns its place when the destination is fussy. Older car stereos, some Android devices, small MP3 players, and plenty of upload forms accept MP3 and nothing else.
FLAC vs MP3 at a glance
| Question | FLAC | MP3 |
|---|---|---|
| Compression type | Lossless | Lossy |
| File size | Larger | Smaller |
| Plays in Files on iPhone | Listed by Apple as supported | Yes |
| Accepted by fussy devices and forms | Sometimes | Almost always |
| Can be restored after converting | Not applicable | No, the discarded detail is gone |
What you lose, and what you do not
FLAC keeps every detail of the recording it was made from. MP3 throws some of that detail away to make the file smaller. Once an MP3 exists, the discarded part cannot be brought back, and converting the MP3 to FLAC later only wraps the reduced audio in a bigger file.
So treat the MP3 as a copy for the car or the upload form. Keep the FLAC where it is. If you delete it after converting, you have swapped your best version for your smallest one.
Where the conversion happens
Apple’s Shortcuts app has no action that encodes MP3, so Grabio hands this job to VERT. Grabio itself runs no servers for your files. VERT’s homepage says “All file processing is done on your device,” and its privacy policy says most conversions, audio included, run locally in your browser.
VERT is still a third-party site, so read its privacy policy before sending anything sensitive. The general MP3 route is in convert audio to MP3 on iPhone. This page stays with FLAC only.
Other audio jobs
Sharing a long recording by message or email? Compress an audio file on iPhone covers that.
If the file is a WAV rather than FLAC, see converting M4A to WAV, which explains how uncompressed audio behaves. For every other format, converting any file format on iPhone is the wider guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can iPhone convert FLAC to MP3 without an app?
Not on its own. Files, Music and Voice Memos have no format conversion. The free Grabio Shortcut adds a menu item to the share sheet that sends the file to a converter site, so you install no separate app.
Can an iPhone play FLAC files?
Apple lists FLAC among the audio formats iPhone supports for playback. Try tapping the file in Files first. You only need MP3 if the device or form you are sending it to does not accept FLAC.
Does converting FLAC to MP3 lose quality?
Yes, some. MP3 is lossy, so detail is discarded to shrink the file, and it cannot be restored. Keep the original FLAC and use the MP3 as a copy.
Is Grabio free for this?
Yes. Grabio is free, with no account, no login and nothing to upgrade to. The converter site it opens is a separate third-party service.
Why do I have to pick the file again on the converter site?
iOS does not let a Shortcut place a file into a website’s upload box. Tapping the upload area and choosing your FLAC is one extra tap, and it cannot be automated.
